If it’s a pyrrhic victory for Hamas, then it’s a complete political disaster for Fatah, and Abbas no longer has any relevance to the Palestinian people whatsoever.
And to blame Hamas for the clearly intentional targeting of Palestinian civilians by the Israelis gets at about 0.1% of the story.
Take a look at the pictures of Zeitoun. The fucking Israelis wiped that Palestinian village off the map. Literally, it’s just fucking gone. Do we blame Hamas for that? No, Israel does not want to live with the Palestinians as equal human beings and that’s why this war started. They razed Zeitoun just like they raised the Palestinian villages that once stood where Sderot now stands. Not once, on our media, did it get mentioned that the Palestinians that once lived upon the land where Sderot (and Ashkelon, and most of the other places where Palestinian missiles where falling) now stands were ethnically cleansed and they and their descendants now live where? Oh yeah, the refugee camps of Gaza.
And I keep hearing that Hamas broke the ceasefire. This is utter nonsense. Hamas held to the ceasefire and even managed to put a damper on missiles from Islamic Jihad, PFLP, and other factions. If Israel was truly concerned about the missiles, they would have negotiated with Hamas and not placed a blockade on the Gaza strip as a inhuman and criminal form of collective punishment. And Israel would not have provoked Hamas into dropping the ceasefire with that incursion into Gaza, prior to the end of the ceasefire, which killed a number of Hamas tunnel men.
As far as I’m concerned, no Westerner, not one, has the right to tell the Palestinians how they can resist the racist, genocidal, colonial settler state that is Israel. Peaceful strikes and demonstrations get them killed and dispossessed, throwing rocks at tanks gets them killed and dispossessed, the American-sponsored “peace process” gets them killed and dispossessed, and missiles gets them killed and dispossessed. What does that tell me? It tells me that the Israeli power structure wants the Palestinians killed and dispossessed.
Ehud Barak, in rare moment of honesty, was asked what he would do if he had been born a Palestinian some years ago. His reply? “I would have joined a fighting organization.”
That’s more honest than all of the Western liberals telling the Palestinians that rockets are “unproductive.” Every mother-fucking thing has been “unproductive” for the Palestinians, because Zionism does not recognize the Palestinians as fellow human beings.
One more thing. The Israelis planned this assault more than six months ago, reports in the Israeli media make that perfectly clear. This was never about missiles, this was about punishing the Palestinian civilians for refusing to go along with American-Israeli plans to submit to the corrupt and collaborationist Fatah. Fatah, it should be remembered, was once decried as “terrorists” with the exact same language and iconography that is now used to condemn Hamas. But Fatah, in agreeing to serve as American-Israeli stooge, has now fatally undermined itself. Abbas is even worse than Arafat in this regard and has consigned himself into the political graveyard.
This is just observation. I would have preferred if the secular Fatah had remained committed to the Palestinian cause, rather than to the perks being American-Israeli stooges, but they didn’t, and so the Islamist Hamas filled the vacuum. And if Hamas were to go the same route, some other group would rise up in their stead. Because, in the long term, the only choices available are genocide or recognition of Palestinian rights, including the right to their homeland. Unless global political circumstances change drastically, genocide is off the table. The time has come to recognize that the Zionist project, establishing a land for the Jews and only the Jews, a project born of the worst forms of European nationalism, is dead.
