Another Move in the Great Game
The NY Times reports that the ObamAdmin has offered a quid-pro-quo with Russia: more Russian support for pressuring Iran to give up nuclear weapons technology in exchange for scrapping the U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe.
This is smart diplomacy, but I think the “leak” itself is strategic, too. Puts a little pressure on Russia, gets the word out about Obama diplomacy without official sanction, and invites the End-Timers to speculate wildly about a socialist caliphate. Anything to keep the Raving Right on the edge is probably a good thing.
There is a moral side to this, too. If Russia cooperates, and Iran concedes, nuclear tensions reduce world-wide. It bothers me that the U.S. is attaching strings to its contribution to nuclear proliferation, especially since “missile defense” is a bit of a misnomer, anyway. We need more walking our talk. It also bothers me that the superpowers use the rest of the world — Eastern Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, etc — as a chess board. My fellow Americans, imagine how we would react to European Union missiles planted in our backyards. Just a little empathy exercise I practice with my children when they are jerks to each other. Do we forget that shit when we grow up?
