I try to avoid using Orwellian tropes in my work, because they get overused in political discourse, and often misused. But when the right keeps using the law to remove books and forbid teaching on subjects that make them uncomfortable or challenge their selective memory of history, the tropes are too blatant to ignore. “Who controls the past now controls the future.Who controls the present now controls the past,” as the song goes.
In case anyone is wondering, the woman in the red suit in panel 5 is State Attorney General for Florida Ashley Moody, who has been supporting and defending DeSantis’ so-called Stop WOKE Act in court.
