Appropriate Responses To Being Offended

appropriate-responses

There have been a lot of great cartoons made in response to the murders of Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, writers and security personnel this week. This cartoon is obviously inspired by those events. But novelist William Gibson tweeted an interesting observation:

That sad apprehension that even the most horrific terrorist acts are basically no more than a form of trolling.

— William Gibson (@GreatDismal) January 8, 2015

The cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo were master trollers, if you want to look at their provocations that way. They certainly had no compunction offending people. Those of us who spend too much time online — and that is an increasing portion of the global population — or spend too much time watching cable news or too much time in extreme places of worship or too much time in MMPORGs have a minute-by-minute exposure to ideas, expressions and images that will offend us. There are those who would argue that “you have no right to not be offended” — fair enough. But trollers have no right to not face the outrage of the people they have offended. A fundamental part of free speech is its role in fostering debate. Unfortunately there are elements in our society — murderous terrorists, but also white supremacists who bomb NAACP headquarters and the #gamergate idiots who drive women out of their homes with violent threats to rape and kill them — who don’t seem to get that threatening the lives of others is not a legitimate part of the argument. Disagree — be disagreeable! — but don’t forget your humanity.

New Pages Up On Wanderlost

by kevinwmoore on September 17, 2014

Two new pages have been published to Wanderlost. They are the final two pages of the final story of the webcomic, so that draws to a close a project that I have been working on for the last 12 odd years, off and on.

A lot of “off”, actually, which is why it took so long. To be fair to myself, I have been pretty busy: raising two kids, earned a master’s degree, drew another webcomic, became a librarian, and so on.

But it’s done. I am pretty relieved. Now I can focus on compiling the stories into a single volume and finding a way to publish it. Mostly like will use Kickstarter or GoFundMe. Stay tuned!

Sketchbook: NFL and Misogyny

nflmisogyny

Or not.

The big news in sports this week is the NFL’s indefinite dismissal of Ray Rice, following publication of a video that showed Rice brutally beating his fianceé, Janay. Rice had previously received a two-week suspension related to this violence, but most people with a sense of justice or compassion considered this an inadequate response, to say the least. Only after the video appeared on TMZ did Roger Goodell et al. realize that a man beating a woman unconscious is a poor representative of the league. Rice’s dismissal is long overdue, and reflects a culture of tolerance of all sorts of violence against women, dogs or anyone who appears weak and vulnerable. Hence why Michael Sam, the first openly gay football player in the league, has had such a hard time getting on the field, despite a stellar collegiate record. Gayz are still considered “less than” properly male in the typical locker room mentality of the sport.

Disgusting, but not surprising. Not if you have been paying attention since high school. Thankfully more people now are less willing to let this shit slide.
