Sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein is the subject of this week’s Cranky Sociologist caricature. Wallerstein is the primary developer of world-systems theory, which has been invaluable in our modern understanding of globalization and late capitalism. You can read more about him in SocProf’s post at the Cranky Sociologists blog.
Another entry into the Cranky Sociologists gallery. Karl Marx was much easier to play around with, because unlike most other sociologists, he is incredibly well-known — though, honestly, not through any fault of his own. No doubt he would have loved to see the revolutions he inspired, but he was far too skeptical of authority and critical of the superstructure to have taken much liking to the iconography that arose afterwards. I prefer to think of him this way, a revolutionary taking part in labor struggles and giving capitalists the shit they deserve.
(BTW, do you know how hard it was for me to resist my comedic impulses and portray him struggling with his piles? That poor guy.)
Here is a webcomic page I created for IncitED, a nonprofit organization that helps raise money and awareness for education projects. Props to Kevilina and Peter, who were a pleasure to work with.
To the Commissioned Comics Gallery.
