This is part of a sequence I have thought a lot about. Like I mentioned last week, I had some hesitancy about putting something so directly tied to current events in a story that treats current issues in a more removed way. But as we saw in early 2018, Fetch’s whole reason for leaving the human world is tied to the crisis in politics we are facing, so I felt in the end I couldn’t avoid it. Sometimes you gotta be “on the nose.” So be it. Besides, I kinda enjoy the metacommentary on my own political cartoon practices.

I hope y’all are enjoying a day off, if that is how your work schedule allows. It is a day when we honor the sacrifices of people we send into war, even if we tend to ignore them the rest of the year, we don’t question why we wage war in the first place, and we never learn from the mistakes of past wars. Kinda like Christmas and the poor.

PANEL 1
Closeup of Fetch in a crowd, looking alarmed. People in crowd around him are suggested, not fully seen.

FETCH: I thought, “Who’s this clown? Did we go to demon school?”

PANEL 2
Fetch imagines Trump, from behind, in front of a large crowd of angry faces

FETCH: But he was like no demon I had ever seen.
He had no subtlety, no clever trick.
Just raw anger, naked hatred.
And resentment! Everyone was to blame!
Worst of all ... the crowds ate it up.

PANEL 3
Fetch imagines Kevin at his drawing board

FETCH narrating: I tried to get the humans I knew to do something about it...
KEVIN: I drew a very nasty cartoon! See? Anus mouth!
FETCH: Oh yeah. That’ll show ‘em.
