The Stolen Child — Page 16
Well, this got violent quickly. Such is life in parts of the Unseelie Court. The Redcap inhabits the swamps and castle ruins of Scotland and England, waiting to slay anyone who wanders in and use their blood to dye his cap red. There’s more info here at The World of Myths. As always, I play a little loose with these details. Brian is obviously not a dwarf, nor is his dad, really. I went for a more general elfish look. We first met Brian along with the main cast of squatters in Chapter Two.

PANEL 1: Fiona gestures to Brian, who stands by a hospital bed, fluffing a pillow. On the wall behind him a scythe is mounted.
FIONA: If you need a hospital, Brian’s the one to see.
He’s teaching himself the art of medicine and wants to become a druid.
PANEL 2: Fetch speaks to Brian.
FETCH: Uh, what’s with the scythe?
BRIAN: Well, like … my dad was a Red Cap, right?
PANEL 2: Brian narrates over the scene a swamp full of tall trees and a large lake. In the foreground an elf in a red cap, Brian’s dad, uses his scythe to eviscerate a fisher, who drops his fishing pole. A young Brian looks on from behind a tree, a shocked look on his face.
BRIAN: He used this to chop up anyone who wandered into his swamp.
All I wanted was someone to play with. When I ran away from home I nicked the scythe.
PANEL 3: Brian contemplates his scythe.
BRIAN: I can’t undo what dad did, but I can try. I figured this must be good for surgery.
PANEL 4: Fetch looks somewhat confused. Brian responds a little perplexed.
FETCH: Uh, why not use a scalpel?
BRIAN: Huh. That would be more precise.
